Brockwitz half-liter Beer steins in vaseline glass!
Description : If this pattern were seen in carnival glass, it would be referred to as STAR AND DRAPE. The original catalog entry for this was made by Glasfabrik BROCKWITZ AG (limited company) and are shown in an original Brockwitz catalog from 1928. The stein was labeled STAMMSEIDEL 1, which loosely translates to a mug with an attached lid. Brockwitz never named the pattern. If you look at the left stein, near the top, you will see it is acid-etched marked: 0.5L for 1/2 liter. To the very top point of the metal lid, these stand 9" tall.

This pair was found in a small antique shop on the outskirts of CASTROVILLE, TX, (on the San Antonio side of town). It was a run down little shop, with those welded animal shapes made out of old farm implements scattered about the property in the front (the kind that you don't worry about taking in every nite, cuz no one is going to steal them). Inside, there was a treasure trove of old glass, pottery, ceramics and a little bit of everything. The lighting was so poor, I just wandered around with my small blacklight on, and in the back of the shop, in the bottom of a cabinet, waaaaay in the back of the cabinet, these two beauties lit up! They had about 2 years worth of dust on them. I took them up to the front counter, and each was priced at $250. Both metal lids have a small stress crack right at the hinge. Because they had been there forever, and I think I was the first to ever show any interest in them, she knocked the price down to what I suspect she had in them: I got them both for $300.

Since that day, I have seen two other steins like this on ebay, and both had some kind of damage. They sold for over $300 in their damaged conditions.

The gold paint appears to be original (albeit, sloppy) decoration. Whenever I include these in any display of glass, they get more attention from passersby than any other display item on the table.
