Vaseline Glass

Blue cut to Vaseline bowl

Blue cut to Vaseline bowl
Description : I got this piece last fall from the great people at http://www.great-glass.co.uk/ They did not know who made it, nor do I. The outer layer is cobalt blue, which you can see is true cobalt, if you look at the foot of the piece. Most cut glass that is two-color was made by Val St. Lambert, but when they did it, they cut through the outer layer to expose the vaseline under-layer. This piece is cut glass, but was not cut deep enough to show the yellow inner layer. Yet, the cutting is significantly deeper than engraved or wheel-cut glass. My best guess was that the maker wanted to show more of a muted tone, smoky grey-blue. If that was the maker's intent, they succeeded nicely! The composite photo with the UV shows it from a variety of angles. When it is photographed looking INTO the dish, the vaseline glass layer shines brightly. When photographed from the bottom, the blue cobalt blocks the majority of the UV. You can also see where the vaseline glass gather goes all the way to the bottom of the bowl in one of the UV photos. The bowl is quite heavy, due to the leaded qualities and having to be thick enough for cutting. Height is 4 3/4" and top diameter is 6 3/4". I have nothing else in my collection that compares to this piece.
